Ballads, Babies & Barbeque!

The rocks and hills are older than they are but hopefully can't sing nearly as well. Dynamically dueting since 1983, Paul Land and Ray Hildebrand have produced several classic recordings. But this album is a solid mix of live concert and studio work. Part of their "ROFL" (Rolling-On-Floor-Laughing) concert experience has been captured from performances during two nights at Homer's Coffee House in downtown Overland Park, Kansas, Johnson County's Yuppie Central. Songs celebrating marital life, barbeque, inevitable laughter and the sounds of Espresso machines and blenders mix together for a wonderful you-are-there experience. Some of their best comedy to date is enclosed within the boundaries of laser disc and jewel case.

But its not all fun and games. The message is also from the heart of Land & Hildebrand as they wrestle with modern topics such as personal accountability, abortion and the pain of guilt. This is Paul & Ray at their most unforgettable and poignant. Paul said this about their newest offering, "We really feel that the message contained in the words 'Most all of our life, we bleed from a knife, that cuts from the inside out' (in the song 'I Love You, I Do, You Bet' by Michael Kelly Blanchard recorded herein) is possiby the most important truth we have to communicate at this time." The message is that unbearable guilt* and pain can be lifted away from the heart and placed at the foot of the cross of Calvary.

Notes on the Music of "Ballads, Babies & Barbeque ": ============================================================= ----->Love Goes Round and Round A little B3 organ sound and harmonica put us aboard the life cycle of love goin’ round and round. This little melody will run through your head and pop out at the strangest times. Its gospel flavor and catchy hook lends itself to shower singing –I know that for a fact (grin.) So, enlarge your very own repertoire and encircle the room with the boys as they remind us of the power of Perfect love. ----->Millie & Joe A very timely personal tribute to his grandparents, Paul wrote this song about his father’s birth. Without the love story of Millie & Joe and the choice they made things would have been very different. If you look up the trunk of your own family tree, most would find similar branches grafted in. Wonderful guitar work by Paul Land and amazing electric guitar leads by producer Curt Bartlett round out this sweet ballad. ----->If We Don’t Sing Wow! Here’s another sing-along as we visit the nighttime veldts of Africa. Overdubs abound as we listen to crickets and praises echo through the rocks and hills of the mind. We are transported into the mists of sound. If you listen carefully… (headphones are a must) you will hear the roar of the mightiest denizen of the jungle. No, it ain’t the Lion King you silly person… It’s the great Mountain Gorilla. Textured vocals, percussion and bug sounds combine for a pleasing mix. ----->Hang Up & Drive Another song from the creative mind of Buddy Kalb -songwriter, award winner and all around nice guy. Most of us have cell phones these days and we would never endanger anyone at any time with our usage, would we? Right! Well… um…er Anyway, this song is an extremely funny send up of the ubiquitous communications device and the other unusual behavior often witnessed. Hate SUV’s? People who do their makeup, eat spaghetti and read a newspaper all while piloting a 2 ton plus death machine? This one’s for you! ----->The Dog Song (If He’d Only Treated Her Like A Dog) Marital problems as solved by your best friend. No, not that guy …the one waggin’ his tail at your feet. Your doggie pal has some great advice for you even though he sometimes chooses unsanitary drinking alternatives. Join the boys live at Homer’s Coffee House in beautiful Overland Park, Kansas. The infamous Yuppieville was rockin’ that night! Anyway, you’ll find yourself howlin’ with laughter at this one! Bass, small drum set and Land’s guitar work combine with the sounds of coffee making machines to lend a coffee scented air of realism to the piece. ----->The Cat Song (She Only Talks That Way to the Cat) This is about that fat freeloader lounging’ around the house. No, not your husband, the furry kitty rubbing past your leg. Written from the point of view of an envious husband, it’s a funny invitation to self-examination. Mr. Tuna-Breath gets attention for a reason, guys. ‘Nuff said. Another live track complete with real live laughter and coffee soaked atmosphere. I need a cup ‘o java right now just thinking about it. ----->Barbeque Dedicated to yours truly for a reason. I love this song AND it’s subject! Kansas City barbeque is famous for a reason. Arthur Bryant’s, Jackstack, Martin City Smokehouse -I’ve been there, baby! All those wonderful memories of greasy lip-smackin’ melt-in-your-mouth barbeque –don’t they deserve a song? Well, here it is. You listen, I’m goin’ down to my friendly neighborhood BBQ to get some ribs. They’re twenty percent off ‘cuz the Chiefs won! Sa-weet!! I’m outa here! ----->Ain’t Nobody Lookin’ Integrity and Accountability –watchwords that a lot of folks wish would be part of politics, and hope (and sometimes expect) of their leaders. But what about the rest of us? Is there a standard? Personal integrity is examined in this timely song by Mr. Kalb. Country fiddle, blues harp, country shuffle and some of the best dobro playin’ this side of Nashville put us in the mood to look within. J. Edgar Hoover and Bill Clinton, look out! Personal introspection is back! ----->I Know Now An original Christmas carol written by our own Ray Hildebrand. This is an old favorite for some of us updated with a Celtic flavor. Irish penny whistle, percussion and Irish fiddle send this ballad echoing through the heather on the hill. He is Peace, He is Love He is Joy –I know now who He was ….that Baby Boy! ----->I Love You, I Do, You Bet This haunting ballad will stick with you long after you put the CD away. How many times have you labored with secret guilt or shame of a past, in pain. We wish to have, long to have, hope to have deliverance from that pain. This beautiful illustration of God’s love is easier understood than that of a thousand sermons. Put on your headphones, close your eyes and prepare to be surrounded by the wonderful, unfathomable love and forgiveness of the Creator of the Universe. Accordion, fiddle, and mandolin augment Land’s superlative guitar performance. ----->If We Don’t Sing Reprise Just as a reminder as they close out the CD... don't take praising God for "granite." You don't wannna get beat out (up?) by a rock do ya? ----->Bonus Track While I can’t tell you what this is… I can tell you that this one is “snot bubble” funny (um sorry, it’s the best I could do) A hint: It’s a live track from Homer’s, unadorned and goofy as they get.
